This means that the villa’s solar panels produce an amount of electricity that is more than enough to power the house. Hot water also comes for free, thanks to the solar hot water system installed on the roof (be careful when you open the hot-water tap, the water can come out really hot!).

But to make the most out of our green systems, we need our guests to follow two simple but important rules:

Shift your electric energy consumption from night to day time.

Our villa does not yet have a battery system to accumulate the excess electricity produced during the day (but we are working on it!). The excess production is therefore fed to the grid during the day and withdrawn during the night (yes, fridges run 24h/day…). This back-and-forth causes inefficiencies that we want to minimize. To help us with that, for example, do the laundry and run the dishwasher during the day (on these two appliances see also below). If you have an electric vehicle that needs a charge, please let us know in advance and, most of all, charge it during the day!

Things that you absolutely need to do to run the dishwasher and washing machine.

We have already said that, to the extent possible, your laundry and dishes should be done during the day. But there is more. These appliances use electric energy for two purposes: generate hot water and run their internal mechanics. For the latter, why waste electric energy to warm up water when our solar system already produces hot water in abundance? The solution is in the external thermostat (see picture) that you will find connected to the dishwasher and washing machine(for the dishwater, look under the sink). Instead of feeding cold water that then needs to be warmed up, this eco-friendly system feeds the appliance directly with the solar water at the right temperature! But to do this (and actually, to have the appliance run) there is a small manual step that you need to take care of. First, select on the appliance, as you would always do, the washing program that you desire, paying attention to the water temperature indicated. Second, turn on the external thermostat (depending on the model, you either press a button or flip a switch – a light will turn on). Then use the thermostat’s knob to select the same temperature as the one required by your washing program. You’re done, super easy!

Oh, talking about electric vehicles, villa “il Geco” has a nice electric scooter (top speed 75 km/h). We usually keep it for ourselves when we are at the villa, but we can give it to our guests when we are not there. If you use it, remember to keep the battery charge in the 10-90 percent range (to improve the battery life avoid going outside this range) and follow the rule: always charge when the sun shines!

Trash collection and recycling

In Santa Teresa, trash is recycled and collected door-to-door.

“Recycled” means that you need to sort the trash into six categories: paper, cans & metal, glass, plastic, organic waste, and non-recyclables.
